studio ASYNCHROME has transformed the Schlossberg Funicular with drawings in the frame of the Cultural Year 2020.

The funicular car with its stunning view becomes a space-time capsule offering profound insight. The view over the historical old town and its idyllic environs becomes an insight into the structures of a city and its mechanisms of control. A digital panopticon is superimposed on the analogue panorama.
Using a special film, studio ASYNCHROME have affixed their drawings to the glass fronts of the Schlossberg Funicular. The technologically innovative film is controlled via programming in such a way that the transparency of the glass pane can be transformed into the opacity of a sheet of paper. Suddenly, one is no longer just in a transparent funicular car and looking at the city and its surrounding area, but is confronted with the observing eyes of the city and its surroundings through the “superimposed” drawings: Surveillance cameras in public space, drones over the roofs of the city—and the first satellite Sputnik, which is Russian for constant companion, is flying above the supposedly idyllic scenery. Everything that moves (commodities, information, capital, humans) is tracked and traced today.
Thereby becoming transparent is not only the artistic strategy of the artists’ duo, but also the core theme of their graphic exploration. We readily reveal the most personal details of our lives via tablets, smartphones, smart watches and the so-called “Internet of Things”. Under the both deceptive and elusory label of “personalization”, they are penetrating ever deeper into the private sphere and no longer merely trying to predict our behaviour, but to actively guide it. A digital grid has been laid over our city, our society and our bodies in a neither visible nor tangible way. Different perspectives are captured and broken down into data particles. Which perspective will you coose?

Prototype studies
